1. Jury selection begins in attempted murder trial
Jury selection began on Monday for an Albany man charged in connection with a homicide in Cohoes. Dontie Mitchell, 44, is charged with attempted murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in connection to the shooting death of Shieer Leggett in August 2023.
2. Trooper who shot, killed Hillsdale man set to retire
New York State Police have announced the off-duty officer who shot and killed a Hillsdale man in September will retire on Tuesday. Trooper Brian Rudolph chose to retire after 23 years of service for personal reasons, according to State Police.
3. Brendan Cox sworn in as Albany Police Chief
In a swearing-in ceremony on Monday, Brendan J. Cox assumed the role of Chief of the Albany Police Department. Mayor Kathy Sheehan swore in Cox, who served as department chief from 2015 to 2017.
4. NYSP searching for truck theft suspects who allegedly rammed trooper car
New York State Police announced a search is underway for a pair of suspects reportedly involved in a hit-and-run with a trooper car. The incident occurred on Sunday in Brainard on the Columbia County/Rensselaer County line near Routes 20 and 66.
5. New high school opening in Albany
A new charter school will open in the city of Albany for the 2025-2026 school year. KIPP Capital High School is still under construction on Northern Boulevard. It will be open come August, but open enrollment is already underway.
