129 Million Indians Living In Extreme Poverty, Surviving On Less Than Rs 180 A Day: World Bank Report
Per the latest World Bank Report, close to 129 million Indians are living in extreme poverty while trying to survive on less than $2 a day (or about Rs 180). While it is down from a whopping 430 million figure in 1990, the stark difference is the number of billionaires and millionaires in the country and the overall population. Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani are Asia’s richest billionaires, and the collective net worth of India’s top 100 wealthiest has surpassed a trillion dollars. While the media gets orgasm showcasing the battle of net worth between the top two billionaires of India, the real warfare happens on the streets, where millions are stranded in abject poverty. The priorities, however are getting a million dollar ticket to a coldplay concert in black while cribbing about how helpless one is about fate’s cold play on the impoverished. Adding more woe to the scathing statistic, per the higher poverty standard of $6.85, there is a significant increase in Indians living below poverty line in 2024 relative to 1990.
Almost 129 million Indians are living in extreme poverty in 2024, on less than $2.15 a day, down from 431 million in 1990, the World Bank said in report on Tuesday.@ShivaRajora7 #poverty https://t.co/mjLvG3BDYI— Business Standard (@bsindia) October 16, 2024
“Far more are living in extreme denial,” jibed one user, while another took potshots at the RW pseudo-nationalists glorifying anything and everything the Ambanis do. “But Nita Ambani wears Pakistan’s GDP on her neck?” quipped a couple of users. For reference, one of the tweets is appended below. “Lets feed them with jingoism and fake nationalism,” commented another.
