MAGA celebrates Kash Patel’s FBI nomination: “America First fighter”
Supporters of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement are celebrating the nomination of Kash Patel to director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), marking a pivotal moment for the group’s influence on federal institutions.
Patel, a close ally and staunch supporter of Donald Trump, and a former national security and intelligence official, was tapped by the incoming president during his first administration for several critical roles and has been openly critical of the FBI.
In an announcement on his Truth Social account on Saturday, Trump said: “I am proud to announce that Kashyap “Kash” Patel will serve as the next director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending justice, and protecting the American people,” adding that Patel will “bring back fidelity, bravery, and integrity to the FBI.”
MAGA-aligned commentators and politicians hailed the move as a victory for transparency and accountability within the FBI, which has faced criticism from the movement over its handling of high-profile investigations in recent years.
Newsweek contacted the FBI for comment via email on Sunday.
Patel has been a controversial figure, accused by some of advancing partisan agendas during his tenure in government roles. His supporters, however, view him as a crusader against what they call the “deep state.”
Several prominent MAGA figures have been celebrating the news online on X, formerly Twitter, with many expressing hope that Patel will take a firm stance against what they see as political bias within the bureau.
Next to a photo of her and Patel, Representative Lauren Boebert posted: “The Deep State is officially on notice! Kash Patel is coming to clean house!”
Newsweek contacted Boebert for further comment via email on Sunday.
“My friend Kash Patel is going to be the next FBI director under President Trump!!” posted Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a staunch MAGA supporter, alongside a screenshot of Trump’s announcement. “It can’t get better than this!!! Y’all get your popcorn ready!!” she added.
Trump-endorsed U.S. Senate nominee Kari Lake also reposted Trump’s announcement saying: “Great move by President @realDonaldTrump nominating Kash Patel to lead the FBI. Kash will help drain the swamp.”
The nomination follows a series of proposed shifts in leadership across federal agencies under the incoming administration, prioritizing placing loyalists in key positions.
Known for his involvement in exposing alleged intelligence abuses during the Russia investigation, Patel is considered a polarizing figure within Washington D.C. circles, and his nomination is a divisive choice.
Critics of Patel’s nomination argue that his appointment signals further politicization of federal law enforcement.
As reported by Newsweek, Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe previously warned during a CNN appearance that “no part of the FBI’s mission” would be “safe” under Patel’s control, who has vowed to dismantle the “deep state” and punish Trump’s critics.
Democrats and some moderate Republicans are expected to scrutinize Patel’s record during the nomination and confirmation process. Political analysts see the nomination as both a strategic and provocative move.
Sophia Cai, senior national politics reporter for Axios, said, “Trump’s decision to name hardline loyalist Kash Patel to FBI director amounts to a massive middle finger to the intelligence community,” as reported by news site Raw Story.
The MAGA movement sees Patel as someone who can symbolize their grievances while delivering on promises to reform federal institutions.
In his nomination announcement, Trump cited Patel’s “pivotal role” in “uncovering the [Russia, Russia] Russia Hoax” as one of the major factors in picking him for the critical role.
“He played a pivotal role in uncovering the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, standing as an advocate for truth, accountability, and the Constitution,” Trump said.
“Kash did an incredible job during my First Term, where he served as Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense, Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council.
“Kash has also tried over 60 jury trials. This FBI will end the growing crime epidemic in America, dismantle the migrant criminal gangs, and stop the evil scourge of human and drug trafficking across the Border. Kash will work under our great Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to bring back Fidelity, Bravery, and Integrity to the FBI.”
The post has so far had almost 80,000 likes.
If confirmed, Patel would likely play a significant role in shaping the future direction of the FBI, further intertwining the agency’s trajectory with the MAGA movement’s agenda.
The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold its first hearing on Patel’s nomination shortly with the coming confirmation hearings set to be a flashpoint in the ongoing debate over the role of partisanship in federal governance.
