Amid Oscar Race Aamir Khan Defends Laapataa Ladies Over ‘Backward Mentality’ Claims; Maybe At One Time…’

Laapataa Ladies is gearing up for its Oscar journey. Directed by Kiran Rao and backed by Aamir Khan the film is now receiving some backlash for its alleged backward mentality. The film was selected as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature category. The selection also landed it in controversy, but the film did receive much critical acclaim on its theatrical release.

Aamir Khan recently opened up about the film in an interview. Aamir was asked why rural films tend to resonate more with Academy voters. When talked about supposedly perpetuating a regressive view of the country, he said, “, “Not all the films we make are set in villages.”

He told BBC Asian Network, “A lot of our films are accepted all over the world. I don’t think audiences all over the world have any major misconceptions about how India is anymore. Maybe at one time, it was true that they felt India was a land of snake charmers and elephants.”
