Another COVID-19 Like Pandemic? Origin, Symptoms And More About HMPV Rising In China
China is reportedly experiencing a surge in cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), raising concerns about a potential health crisis following the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports and social media posts claim that hospitals in China are overcrowded with patients under age 14 in the northern provinces.
HMPV is a respiratory virus that causes infections in the upper and lower respiratory tract. It affects people of all ages, but young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk.

Symptoms of HMPV
First identified in 2001, the virus causes flu-like symptoms, including cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, it can lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia. The incubation period for the virus ranges from three to six days, with the duration of symptoms varying depending on the severity of the infection.
How does it spread?
The virus spreads through contact with respiratory secretions from coughing or sneezing, close personal contact like shaking hands, or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. Preventive measures include maintaining good hygiene practices and avoiding close contact with infected individuals.

Is there treatment for HMPV?
Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine available for HMPV. Medical care focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications. Severe cases may require hospitalization to provide respiratory support and monitor for further issues.
HMPV and COVID-19 share many similarities. Both viruses can cause respiratory symptoms such as coughing, fever, congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath. They also spread through respiratory droplets and can lead to severe respiratory issues in vulnerable groups. However, HMPV tends to peak during winter and spring, while COVID-19 can spread year-round due to its evolving variants.
