Christmas may affect your trash pickup this week. Here’s when to put your trash, recycle bins out
Christmas is just around the corner, and many businesses and government offices will be closed in observance of the holiday. This may affect your trash and recycling pickup.
Here’s what to know about the trash pickup schedule over the upcoming holidays.
When will my trash be picked up the week of Christmas in Indianapolis?
Trash and recycling will not be picked up on Christmas.
According to Indy.gov, trash, heavy trash and recycling pickup will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week after Christmas.
Christmas is Wednesday, Dec. 25, so for residents who usually get their trash or recycling picked up on Wednesday, it will get it picked up on Thursday next week instead.
The remaining days of the week will follow suit. Meaning Thursday trash will be picked up on Friday and Friday trash will then be picked up on Saturday. This is to get all caught up so the following week’s schedule can go back to normal. This is called a slide schedule.

What days are considered holidays that affect my trash pickup?
The following holidays are observed by the city and result in a slide schedule:
-
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
It is important to note that if any of these holidays fall on a weekend, it will not affect your trash pickup schedule.
How do I know if my trash pickup has been delayed?
Indy Department of Public Works would remind and notify residents of updates regarding trash pickup on social media and in their newsletter.
Can my trash pickup be affected by winter weather?
Yes; slide schedules can also be put into effect when there is severe weather that affects the roads, particularly snow.
If there is snow on the day of trash pickup, the city asks that residents place their carts and recycling bins on the curb in front of large snow piles and, if possible, clear a 4-foot space on each side to allow space for collection trucks.
It is recommended to store your cart and recycling bins away from icy patches and shovel a path from the storage area to your home and the street, and clear snow and ice from the trash and recycling carts regularly.
Will my trash pickup be affected by New Year’s Day?
Yes; your trash pickup will be affected by New Year’s Day. Since it falls exactly a week after Christmas, the slide schedule will look exactly the same as detailed above.
What do I do if I missed my trash pickup?
If you forget to put your trash out and miss your pickup, there’s two things you can do.
If there’s room in your trash can you can save it until next week, but if not you can take your household and heavy trash to the Marion County Citizens’ Transfer Station for a small fee.
The fee is $2 per carload or $5 per SUV or pickup truckload. The only method of payment accepted is cash and you can make up to two trips per day.
Moving trucks, dual axles, trailers, haulers, stake-bed trucks and truckloads larger than 3/4 ton are not permitted.
The Marion County Citizens’ Transfer Station is located at 2324 S. Belmont Ave. and is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
