COPA investigates early-morning West Side shooting near car with off-duty officers inside

CHICAGO — An investigation by Chicago’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is underway on Saturday after a man was injured in an early-morning shooting on the city’s West Side.

According to police, the incident unfolded just before 1:30 a.m., in the 1000 block of South Mayfield Avenue in Austin.

Police said a vehicle, which was occupied by five people, including two off-duty CPD officers, was parked in the area, but when a 26-year-old man got out of the car, a person nearby opened fire.

As the offender fired shots at the victim, police said someone inside the vehicle fired back before the offender fled the scene.

The victim was struck by gunfire and taken to the hospital in serious condition while neither of the off-duty officers were injured in the incident, police said.

Currently, it is unclear what led to the shooting and authorities said no arrests have been made.

CPD’s Investigative Response Team and COPA are investigating the incident.

Those with information on the shooting can contact COPA on their website or by calling 312-746-3609.
