Denver airport opens Concourse A expansion after 2 years of construction
DENVER (KDVR) — After over two years of construction, a remodeled and expanded area of Concourse A at the Denver International Airport is open.
The 120,000-square-foot area opened at the start of the month and includes 83,000 square feet of remodeled space and 37,000 square feet of concourse expansion, according to a release from the airport.
The project started in the summer of 2022 and was completed and opened at the first of the month, costing $220 million — which the airport said was on time and within budget.
The expansion was among the airport’s many projects toward accommodating increased traffic. The airport also plans to add dozens of gates in the coming years, and is in the final phase of the Great Hall Project.
J.D. Power recently released data showing how satisfied travelers are with different airports across the country, and the Denver International Airport scored below average in that survey. However, the airport said the in-progress changes are expected to improve traveler satisfactions.
“Completing the Concourse A-East expansion project marks a major milestone in our effort to serve 100 million annual passengers within the next several years,” said DEN CEO Phil Washington. “I’m proud of everyone at DEN who ensured this project was completed on time and within budget while maintaining a clear commitment to airport growth to meet our tremendous demand.”
What’s in the expanded area of Concourse A?
There are 14 gates, including nine that are remodeled and five that are brand new, as well as an area with six new gate waiting areas serving Frontier Airlines.
The area includes amenities like charging stations, a nursing room, pet relief area, family restroom and a companion care room, as well as restaurants including Snarf’s Sandwiches, Brothers BBQ, Breckenridge Brewery and a CNBC shop.
Plus, the airport said in a release that another food and beverage “concept” is expected to open by the middle of next year.
Behind the scenes, the expansion project also increased office space and included an 8,000-square-foot airline maintenance facility.
