Denver family of 9 without home, cat rescued after fire
DENVER (KDVR) — A family of nine is without their home after a house fire destroyed everything.
Around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the Denver Fire Department responded to a house fire near Mississippi and Winona. Firefighters said crews arrived to heavy fire throughout the home, which is believed to have started in the rear of the building.
“My daughter was on her way to pick our kids up from school and when she was on her way back, that’s when she found the house completely engulfed in flames,” said homeowner Raul Saenz. “We’ve been living here for ten years and just like that, in a couple of minutes, everything is gone.”
The family told FOX31 their home is no longer habitable after they just finished Christmas shopping, and wrapping up their gifts. The family has other family members nearby.
“Right now, it’s just keeping my family up, keeping their spirits up and figure a way how to not let this bring down our Christmas,” said Saenz. “I wish this was a dream. I just wish somebody would pinch me like this never happened, so many memories and everything.”
No one was home at the fire of the fire. Their dog Grease, got out of the house. Their cat, Kitty, was rescued by firefighters.
“It was great because my kids were devastated about the cat. The moment they said that the cat was alive, that changed their spirit right away. As long as that happened, that’s great,” said Saenz.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, although firefighters are looking into possible arson. If you would like to support the family, they have set up a GoFundMe.
