Family Celebrates Survival: Four Generations, Four Breast Cancer Battles

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) – In a testament to resilience and faith, the Howard family reflects on their journey as breast cancer survivors during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With four women from two generations diagnosed with the disease, their stories highlight the importance of hope and support.

Shirley Hardin was diagnosed in 1999 with a lumpectomy and again in 2016 with triple-negative breast cancer. Miltonnee Clater was diagnosed in 2009, Lisa Jones received her diagnosis in 2015 and Vesta Harris was diagnosed in 2012. Each of them faced their unique battles.

“My cousin survived, and then my aunt survived. I took inspiration from that,” Lisa shared. “I come from a family of survivors.”

Despite their family history, genetic testing revealed that their cancers were not genetically linked. Nurse practitioner Robin Sanders noted that while family histories may suggest a potential gene mutation, it occurs in only about five to ten percent of all cancers.

The Howard women’s experiences illustrate that one cannot always discern a person’s situation at first glance.

“I kept working because people didn’t really believe that I had breast cancer,” Hardin recalled. “One of my girlfriends found out because my nail beds turned black.”

Throughout their journeys, the women leaned on their faith and the love of their family.

“God did it. If you keep the faith and keep your hand in His hand, you’ll make it,” Harris said.

For the Howard family, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not just a time for reflection; it’s a daily celebration of life.

They cherish simple joys like retirement, playing with grandchildren, and spending quality time together.

“Fight like a girl,” the Howard family asserts, embodying their relentless spirit as they continue to inspire others in their community. Their story is a reminder that, regardless of the challenges faced, hope, faith, and family can lead to miraculous outcomes.
