No reported allergic reactions
As of December 18, 2024, there have been no reported allergic reactions related to the recalled chips. The company has informed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the situation and is working to ensure consumer safety.
Understanding milk allergies
According to The Mayo Clinic, a milk allergy is an immune system reaction to milk proteins, distinct from milk intolerance, which does not involve the immune system. Symptoms of a milk allergy can range from hives, swelling, and wheezing to severe anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction that can obstruct breathing.
While milk allergies are relatively common, incidents of undeclared milk allergens prompting recalls have occurred before.
Earlier in 2024, both chocolate bars and Costco’s Kirkland Signature butter faced recalls due to similar labelling oversights.
