From Hot Shots VIP To MoodX, Government Of India Blocks 18 OTT Platforms Over Vulgar Soft Porn Content
In the era of Amrit Kaal, the Indian government has begun weeding out content that is harmful for the growing generation by blocking 18 Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms for broadcasting what officials termed “obscene and vulgar” content.
The Information and Broadcasting Minister L. Murugan made the above announcement in the Lok Sabha. The banned platforms, which include notably named services such as Dreams Films, Voovi, and HotShots VIP, were found in violation of the Information Technology Rules of 2021. These regulations mandate strict content guidelines for digital media publishers and online content providers. According to Murugan, the platforms had consistently failed to comply with the content policies. Per the I&B minister, these 18 platforms streamed obscene and vulgar content, and even porn, which is outright banned in the country.
The GOI executed the blockade on March 14, 2024, acting under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. This provision empowers authorities to block content that could potentially compromise national sovereignty, security, or public order. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting coordinated with various intermediaries to implement the ban effectively. Beyond content moderation, the regulations also enforce a comprehensive Code of Ethics for digital news publishers. This code aligns with established journalism standards, including the Press Council of India’s ‘Norms of Journalistic Conduct’ and the Programme Code under the Cable Television Network Regulation Act.
Meanwhile, the internet wanna know why Ullu and Alt Balaji escaped the GOI’s whip.
