Google Launches Gemini AI Image Generator For Google Docs; Here’s How To Use It

Google has just rolled out a powerful new feature for Google Docs called the image generator, which uses the company’s Gemini AI technology. This feature allows users to create highly detailed, photorealistic images directly within their documents, adding a whole new dimension to written content. Following the previous integration of Gemini that allowed for full-bleed cover images, the image generator makes it easier for users to seamlessly integrate visuals into their work, whether for presentations, reports, or personal projects.

How the Image Generator Works

To use the new image feature, simply open your Google Doc and go to the ‘Insert’ menu at the top left. From there, you’ll find the option “Help Me, Create an Image.” Clicking on this opens a sidebar where you can type in a prompt describing the kind of image you’d like to generate. Whether it’s a landscape, a person, or an abstract concept, the AI will use your prompt to create an image that matches your description.

The tool gives users flexibility with three aspect ratios to choose from and offers a dropdown menu for additional layout options. The Imagen 3 algorithm powers the image creation, enabling Google Docs to generate incredibly lifelike photos of various subjects. You can also fine-tune the image by adjusting its size, aspect ratio, or even selecting different styles like watercolor, making it easy to tailor the visuals to fit your document’s theme.

Once the image is generated, you’ll be shown a selection of options. You can choose the best one for your document, or if you’re not satisfied, request more images. The selected image can then be added directly into the document as an inline image. Plus, Google Docs offers several options for editing, including the ability to replace the image, reposition it, find alternative text, or delete it.

Availability and Requirements

This new feature is part of Google’s broader push to integrate AI into its productivity tools. However, the image generator is currently available only to Google Workspace subscribers. To access the feature, users must have a subscription to one of the following: Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education, Gemini Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium.

The rollout is happening gradually, with Rapid Release domains gaining access first. It may take up to 15 days for the full rollout. Those on Scheduled Release domains can expect the feature to be available starting on December 16. Google also encourages users to submit feedback if the images generated don’t meet expectations, allowing them to refine the tool for better results.

With the addition of the image generator, Google Docs users can now bring their documents to life in a way that was previously difficult or time-consuming. The feature combines the power of AI with creativity, offering more customization than ever before. While the tool is initially available to a select group of Google Workspace subscribers, it’s expected to roll out to more users soon, transforming how we create and enhance our documents.
