Investigation underway after shooting outside El Cajon police station
EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — El Cajon police are investigating a shooting involving an officer that occurred outside the police station near City Hall Wednesday afternoon, the department said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
The shooting occurred just before 12:45 p.m. in the parking lot of 100 Civic Center Way. It happened as officers were beginning to set up patrol vehicles for a retirement celebration for a longtime captain, El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells and police Lt. Keith MacArthur confirmed.
According to MacArthur, El Cajon police opened fire after a truck — a 2000 Toyota four-door — ran into one of the officers and then tried to back up over another. Multiple rounds were fired by the two officers at the driver’s side of the vehicle.
The officer who was hit by the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries. They were transported a hospital for treatment.
No further details about the shooting is known at this time, including the condition of the truck’s driver.
FOX 5/KUSI has a crew headed to the scene. Check back for updates.
