'It all happened so fast': Surveillance released in Hayward hit-and-run

HAYWARD, Calif. (KRON) — A Hayward business is sharing surveillance video of a hit-and-run collision that happened right outside the shop on Tuesday. An employee’s vehicle was badly damaged in an area where cars are known to speed.

An extreme example of what employees at Foothill Locksmiths Inc. in Hayward say is a persistent problem along East Lewelling Boulevard.

“It all happened so fast,” said one unnamed employee.

A car speeding down the road slams into a parked 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The hit-and-run happened just before noon on Tuesday.

“We heard a banging sound, so we came outside the front of the store and we saw this smashed-up car,” the employee continued. “He just drove away.”

This employee who wishes to remain anonymous says he did not realize his co-worker’s unoccupied car was damaged until the hit-and-run driver left.

“I have no idea what was going through their minds or if it was even their vehicle, or if they have insurance, or it’s simple just to stop, you know, and just apologize for making a mistake,” the employee said.

The victim filed a report with the California Highway Patrol which is investigating the case.
This employee says speeding is always an issue in the area because the road feeds into nearby freeways.

“What’s right is right and it would be nice if we could figure out, you know, what insurance the guy has, if anything, to just fix what was damaged is all,” the employee said.

Employees at the shop hope a street widening project planned for the area improves traffic safety.
