Jeff Bezos Reveals Bizarre Amazon Productivity Hack Without PowerPoint: ‘We Have Messy Discussions’
Amazon’s 60-year-old billionaire founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos, in his recent New York Times’ DealBook summit chat with Andrew Sorkin, delved into the productive measures at the e-commerce giant that keep its engines running. Some of these have been common knowledge now, making their way into the domain of LinkedIn fluff content. His four strategies for a productive work slash meeting at the corporate includes
1) Two Pizza Team: Jeff Bezos once stated how the company tries to create a team that is no larger than can be fed by two pizzas.
2) No PowerPoints: In a 2018 speech, Bezos revealed that probably one of the smartest things they did at Amazon was getting rid of PowerPoints. Rather, a memo is served. A six-page memo is not just bullet points that some person has meticulously prepared. Great memos are written and rewritten and simply can’t be done in a day or two.
3) Start With Silence End With Messy Discussions: Bezos revealed again during the chat that rather than ppts, memos are handed out. These memos are read in silence. Like in the study hall, everyone sits around the table and delves into the memo for at least half an hour and brings their opinion to the table. Bezos quips that the senior most executives usually speak the last. The meeting starts with the junior most executive’s thoughts. This strategy helps combat “group think,” whereby the thoughts of the boss don’t unduly influence the opinions of others in the room. Bezos said that the meetings after the half-hour silence are usually messy. He stated,
I am very skeptical if the meeting is not messy.”
4) The Empty Chair: The fourth strategy applied by the Amazon boss is the empty chair in the meeting room that represents the customer.
