Man accused of slashing family member with box cutter during argument on Thanksgiving night
BEACH PARK, Ill. — Felony charges have been filed against a man accused of slashing a family member with a box cutter in Beach Park on Thanksgiving night.
Deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to a home in the 10100 block of West California Avenue following a report that a man was threatening his family members with a knife.
Deputies arrived on the scene and allegedly found 28-year-old Ricardo Carcamo-Ortega, a Waukegan resident, outside the home.
After Carcamo-Ortega spotted authorities, he allegedly ran back into the home. Deputies then heard screaming coming from the basement and immediately ran inside.
Once inside, they found Carcamo-Ortega sitting on a couch in the basement, holding a small child. Deputies said they were able to quickly rescue the child and apprehend Carcamo-Ortega.
After taking the suspect into custody, deputies determined that the incident began after he had allegedly become angry after his family tried to stop him from leaving the home and driving while intoxicated, deputies said.
According to deputies, during the argument with his family members, Carcamo-Ortega allegedly pulled out the box cutter from his pocket and slashed a family member’s arm. He also allegedly used the knife to damage a vehicle’s tires and chased other family members with it.
Deputies said the family member who was slashed in the attack was not seriously injured.
Carcamo-Ortega has since been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of domestic battery, and criminal damage to property.
Carcamo-Ortega was being held at the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing on Friday morning.
