Man arrested in connection to fatal shooting at San Jose homeless encampment

(BCN) — San Jose police arrested a man they say shot and killed a man in a homeless encampment in May. At 5:46 p.m. on May 9, police responded to a report of a shooting at an unhoused encampment near Mclaughlin Avenue and Interstate Highway 280.

Officers found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he died three days later. Police said 46-year-old Joseph Martinez from San Jose fled the scene before police arrived.

Detectives were notified Oct. 31 that Martinez was arrested and booked into Washoe County Detention Facility in Reno for an unrelated crime. San Jose police extradited Martinez last Thursday back to San Jose and booked him into Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of murder.

Police said the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated. Anyone with information about the case can contact Detective Sgt. Taylor or Detective Harrington at 4257@sanjoseca.gov and/or 4365@sanjoseca.gov, or at (408) 277-5283.
