Pedestrian fatally struck in Mission District, Walk SF pleads for progress

(KRON) — The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) is investigating the city’s 22nd fatal pedestrian crash of the year after a man was struck by a driver in the Mission District on Sunday.

Walk SF, a city watchdog for pedestrian safety, reported the number of incidents is up already from 2023 where 18 out of 26 traffic-related deaths were victims walking in San Francisco. The organization is calling for more to be done by city leaders.

SFPD released details in its accident log that the collision happened at 2:45 a.m. at the intersection of 16th Street and Rondel Place.  The victim was a middle-aged man, according to Walk SF.

According to Walk SF, 16th Street is listed on the city’s “high-injury network.” The organization said in the last four years there have been three other pedestrian deaths along 16th Street, all contained within the four-block stretch between Valencia Street and Harrison Streets.

Walk SF is asking the city to step up its commitment to Vision Zero, a proactive approach to pedestrian safety that was adopted a decade ago to help end severe and deadly traffic crashes.

“San Francisco adopted Vision Zero ten years ago,” said Jodie Medeiros, executive director of Walk SF. “While important progress has been made to redesign our streets to prioritize safety, these all-to-common tragedies continue to remind us of how far San Francisco still has to go. San Francisco must pass an aggressive, time-bound plan to accelerate Vision Zero progress, with the accountability and funding to get it done.”

On Nov. 17, San Francisco recognized the 10th Annual World Day of Remembrance for Traffic Victims where Walk SF painted 300 pairs of shoes white to honor lives lost.
