Scientists Recreate The Real Face Of Santa Claus After 1700 Years; Internet Reacts With Modi Memes

While the mythological Dutch Christmas figure Sinterklaas, later dubbed Santa Claus, is imaginary, it was famously inspired by Saint Nicholas of Myra, an early Christian saint. Born on March 15, 270 in present-day Turkiye’s Patara in Anatolia, Saint Nicholas is considered the patron saint of students, sailors, toymakers, and unmarried people, among others.

Very little is known about the life account of Saint Nicholas. Legend has it that the revered Christian saint resurrected three murdered children who were pickled in a brine, which a butcher was planning on selling as pork.

Reportedly, he was also listed as an attendee in the first council of Nicaea in 325. There are unsubstantiated claims that it is here where Saint Nicholas slapped a heretic Arius for which he was defrocked and imprisoned temporarily. About two millennia later scientists constructed a 3D imagery of what the saint looked like, based on the data collected in the 1950s by Luigi Martino, an Italian professor. The skull was constructed in 3D while the face was created with statistical projections.

Reactions poured in on social media. “Scientists, bhi nalle baithe hai kuch bhi kar rahe hai,” wrote one, while another jibed, “Why does he look like a non-biological being?” “Nandu hi santa claus hai,” quipped an X user. Another asked, “Kya mudi ji santa claus ke avatar hai?” “Resembles someone who promised Rs 15 lakh in every account,” cheekily remarked a handful of users. One user wrote that while the West has Santa Claus, India has its own Jhaansa Claus. Even Rahul Gandhi wasn’t spared.
