SWAT standoff in Pacific Beach lasts several hours

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego Police and SWAT took a suspect into custody after a standoff at an apartment in Pacific Beach lasted nearly all day Sunday.

San Diego Police officers and SWAT responded to an apartment in the 1600 block of Chalcedony Street in Pacific Beach just before 11 a.m. Sunday for reports of a man who was reportedly throwing things out of his apartment and banging a lead pipe around his home and neighborhood.

A neighbor told FOX 5/KUSI the police were called by concerned neighbors, and SWAT responded after the man threw the lead pipe out of his window, which hit a police car.

The nearly seven-hour standoff ended around 6 p.m. Sunday after officers and SWAT used tear gas to make entry into the home and arrest the suspect. He has not been identified at this time.

The neighbor said the suspect had previously been taken out of his home by police for mental health issues and had just recently returned.
