Toyota Will Finally Rectify One Of Its Mistakes With The bZ4X
Toyota isn’t exactly known for alphanumeric names – at least not as much as the Germans are – but it bestowed its battery electric vehicle (BEV) the bZ4X moniker anyway. However, it appears that this is about to change soon as the automaker is reportedly dropping the bZ4X name – a change that will supposedly rebrand Toyota’s sole BEV offering in North America.
2024 Toyota bZ4X
- Horsepower
- 201 hp
- Torque
- 196 lb-ft
- Drivetrain
- FWD
- Fuel Economy
- 112 – 119 MPGe
- Electric Range
- 222 – 252 miles
The report came from Motor Illustrated, referencing Patrick Ryan, regional director for Quebec and Atlantic Canada for Toyota Canada Inc., as the source of confirmation through an announcement to Quebec automotive press. Ryan reportedly told the media that Toyota is “about to” change the bZ4X name, which is a bit tricky given that the 2025 model year changes have already been announced for North America.
What Will Be The bZ4X’s Replacement?
The Toyota bZ4X name is an acronym for what it represents. The “bZ” part means “Beyond Zero,” Toyota’s blanket vision that aims to achieve carbon neutrality through their products, services, and operations. The “4” positions the vehicle in the supposed lineup of BEVs in terms of size, while the “X” is a marker that it’s a crossover.

Chief engineer at Toyota insists that the bZ4X is a better off-roader than the Land Cruiser.
The report didn’t disclose any information as to what the bZ4X’s replacement will be, so it’s anybody’s guess at this point. We can only assume that Toyota will revert to its typical naming system, just like how Subaru names its mechanical twin, the Solterra. There’s one question, though: will this rebrand change reflect on its premium counterpart, the Lexus RZ? Given that it will stay on the market longer than anticipated, the change isn’t far-fetched.
Expect The Name Change Next Year
Toyota changing the bZ4X name will surely make headlines, but will this improve its sales? The report didn’t mention any other changes, and that isn’t good news. The electric crossover isn’t the best in its class, something that only Toyota loyalists will adore, resulting in not-so-stellar sales figures. It’s evident that the automaker will need to improve something about bZ4X beyond its naming structure to attract more buyers.

If the report holds true, we’ll know more about the changes and improvements next year, if any at all. Given that Toyota is already set for 2025MY, along with the introduction of a new Nightshade trim, we’ll likely hear an official confirmation next year for the 2026 model year.
