Vikrant Massey Defends His Secularism After Working On Sabarmati Report: ‘My Brother Converted To Another…’

Bollywood actor Vikrant Massey will soon be seen in The Sabarmati Report, where he plays a journalist trying to uncover the truth behind the 2002 Godhra incident. Directed by Ranjan Chandel, the film also stars Raashi Khanna and Ridhi Dogra, and is backed by Shobha Kapoor, Amul V Mohan, Ektaa R Kapoor, and Anshul Mohan.

While it releases on 15 November 15, the film has stirred up polarizing reactions, with Massey facing criticism over his perceived secularism due to his association with the project.

Recently, in an interview with Shubhankar Mishra on Unplugged, Massey addressed these criticisms head-on, questioning why people doubt his secular stance. “A truly secular person stands by others regardless of religion, caste, or background,” he said. Reflecting on the polarized nature of social media, Massey explained that his values haven’t changed. He considers himself a liberal, embracing diversity rather than extremes.

When asked about his view of secularism, Massey described it as “living together and respecting each other’s culture while taking pride in your own.” He believes in understanding and not labeling everything in binaries. His approach to secularism, he said, involves accepting others without putting them down or elevating oneself to mock another.

He also revealed his personal experiences, drawing parallels between his values and his family’s diversity. “The country’s DNA is still unity in diversity. I’m still the same. You know the situation in my house. My parents had an inter-caste marriage, so did I. My brother even converted to another religion. What could be more secular than that?” he remarked.

Also, in the same conversation, he said, “Pehle mujhe lagta tha Hindu khatre mei hain, ab mujhe nahi lagta Hindu khatre mein hai; pehle mujhe lagta tha Muslim khatre mein hai, ab mujhe nahi lagta Muslim khatre mei hai.”
