Watch Bengaluru Uber-Rapido Rider Claims Earning Monthly Income Of Rs 80,000; Internet Refuses To Believe

A video gone viral on social media shows an Uber and Rapido driver in Bengaluru claiming to earn anywhere between Rs 80 and 85,000 in a month. He states in Hindi that people would laugh at his statement, but putting in the strenuous hours will earn such staggering figures.

The driver, who appears to be in his mid-thirties or early forties, remarked that he works for around 13 hours a day. Comparing his work to other businesses like retail, the rider quipped that this job gives him hold over working hours and also no stress of someone bossing over him.

But the internet is far from convinced by the man’s statement. The person did not offer proof of his income for a job that earns him more than several junior executives in the respective ride-hailing app firms. Netizens did the math and claimed that it is not ‘mathing’ with the kind of commission that the platforms deduct from the riders.

The internet also indulged in the ‘dignity of work’ debate even as skeptics argued that it is not possible to make a decent living in the gig economy. One user jibed that these apps (Ola, Uber, Rapido, et al.) have “created a much more reputable livelihood than MGNREGA.” For the unversed, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 guarantees ‘right to work’ in rural India by ensuring at least 100 days of employment per household in a financial year. Under the MGNREGA provision, applicants are issued job cards from their respective Gram Panchayat and provided a wage employment within 15 days of the application date.

Meanwhile, another user posted about a Dubai-returned Uber driver in town who, apart from their day job, drives his own car as a cab at night, while the vehicle is contracted for the same during the day.
