Former US house speaker Nancy Pelosi is recovering well after undergoing a successful hip replacement surgery, her office confirmed. The 84-year-old Democratic leader sustained an injury during an official visit to Luxembourg and was transported to Germany for treatment.
Pelosi’s injury occurred during a congressional delegation trip marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Sources familiar with the matter quoted by CBS News said that she injured her left leg in a fall, though her office has not confirmed the exact nature or severity of the injury. Initially, Pelosi was evaluated at Kirchberg Hospital in Luxembourg City.
Due to the nature of the injury, Pelosi was medevaced to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at the Landstuhl Army Base in Germany, according to NBC News. The US Department of Defense provided support for her transport and care.
Surgery and recovery
The surgery, performed on Saturday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, was successful. “Speaker Pelosi is well on the mend,” spokesperson Ian Krager said. Pelosi expressed gratitude to both the medical staff at Kirchberg Hospital and Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for their care and support.
Krager also highlighted Pelosi’s ongoing determination to advocate for quality healthcare for all Americans, adding that she was buoyed by the “overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes.”
Pelosi, the first woman to serve as House Speaker, has been a leading figure in American politics for over two decades. She stepped down from Democratic leadership two years ago but continues to serve as a congresswoman representing San Francisco. Her role as Speaker Emerita underscores her ongoing influence within the Democratic Party.
Despite the injury, Pelosi remained engaged with her duties during her hospitalization, regretting her inability to attend further events commemorating American servicemembers. As NBC News noted, her commitment to public service continues to define her career.
Public reactions and next steps
Pelosi’s office has not indicated how long her recovery might take or whether it will affect her legislative duties. However, her successful surgery and stable recovery suggest she will soon return to her responsibilities.
As per CBS News, Pelosi’s injury and treatment highlight the critical role of military and civilian medical personnel in supporting members of Congress during overseas engagements. Pelosi’s team has thanked these professionals for their dedication and expertise.
